THE OUT OF WATER EXPERIENCE BIO
Hailing from Charm City, Baltimore MD, The Out of Water eXperience is a high intensity, alternative Rock, progressive HipHop band, led by the animated, unorthodox, British born Nigerian, Femi the Drifish. Think Rage Against the Machine meets The Roots, meets Kendrick Lamar, with content that ranges from social justice and self-awareness, to witty rhymes and creative concepts.
The Out of Water eXperience (OWX) formed in 2011 and has been a constant force of live music, and fine lyrics within the Maryland/DC music scene and beyond. Their live shows are an extraordinary experience and have been covered in numerous media publications throughout the Maryland/Washington DC area for their stage display, sounds and crowd interactions.
The band has played venues and events such as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C, Afro Punk in NYC, opened for Redman & Method Man, played Artscape in Baltimore, and numerous others. OWX has released three studio albums; The Clown With No Circus, Mad As A Hatter, and the latest release titled, ANARTKEY Music which they tour and promote.
Most bands will say that they're different but can never prove it, this is the band that stands out and can show it but can play among a variety of numerous live show acts, thus naming their genre, ANARTKEY MUSIC.
Femi the Drifish
Femi Lawal best known onstage as Femi the Drifish, is a writer, poet, educator, activist, advocate, licorice flavored lyricist with the best smile in the business. The British born Nigerian, using Baltimore MD as his base of operation and is well traveled throughout the United States.
Femi is one half of the dynamic spoken word duo, THE 5th L, the front man for the band called The Out of Water eXperience, as well as a touring solo artists in his own right. He has performed around the country, been on BET's Lyric Cafe', shared stages with artists such as; Musiq Soulchild, Saul Williams, Fertile Ground, Ursula Rucker, Raheem DeVaughn, Redman & Method Man and KRS One. He has done series of college tours as a performance poet, performing in over 50 colleges and universities throughout the United States. THE 5th L also have recorded three spoken word albums; Circle-Circle Dot-Dot, The Water Margin and RESET, all of which can be found on itunes.
The Dri Fish is actively involved in using his talents to serve his community – he participates in programs designed to introduce creative writing to students in high schools and middle schools throughout the state of MD through a program called Young Audiences. Femi also facilitates a Promoting Healthy Alternatives for Teens Violence Intervention Program at The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (VIP).
The DriFish’s animated persona matched by his writings that range in content, style and crosses between sarcasm and prolific at the same time. The Out of Water eXperience also has four albums out, The Clown With No Circus, Mad As A Hatter, & the live band album called, OWX LIVE (all can be located & downloaded on itunes or physical copies can be purchased at shows). He is the witty wordsmith that brings a show with artistry, entertainment, along with the best of times to any stage, at the same time keeping the integrity profoundly strong.
